When we first heard about an all-female robotics team focused on STEM learning that was using Vultr, we had to get to know them a little better. Founded in 2015, The Power Struck Girls are a 36-member FIRST Robotics Competition team (FRC) from the Academy of Our Lady High School in Marrero, Louisiana.
We found out they’re getting started with Vultr for web hosting. The group says it’s important to maintain connections with their school community, and with other FIRST teams – something their new site will allow them to do. To achieve this, they’re running a WordPress installation with plugins for team management and cross posting to social media. This will all be powered by a VM from Vultr with 4 GB of RAM and 30GB NVMe of storage. The team tells us it was much easier to deploy the WordPress virtual machine image than they expected!
What’s next for the team? They’re planning on using Vultr Cloud Compute to run web apps that can be used within the FRC community for scouting. This will enable them to collect, compile, and save information that can be used to prepare for future competitions. They’ll also be collecting stats in an easy-to-reference database tracking their robots’ capabilities. The scouting web app will work in conjunction with a web app that will look at match data and suggest teammates for alliances.
Third-year member, Taylor Rotolo, told us that, "Vultr’s support helps us to save money to put towards next year, and it helps us to focus on updating other parts of our team. It will make it easier to share our website.”
We can’t wait to see where these girls go with Vultr.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to use Vultr and are excited to see how far we can take this website,” Rotolo explained.
