Should you switch from DigitalOcean to Vultr?
Jun 28, 2022

Here at Vultr, we try to keep our focus on what we’re building – products like Vultr Talon, our breakthrough cloud GPU service, and our High Performance VMs powered by the latest AMD CPUs.

But, when competitors make big changes, like raising prices 20%, or selling themselves to an acquirer, we think about how it will impact users across the cloud computing market.

We know that in the aftermath of DigitalOcean’s recent price hike announcement (which becomes effective on July 1) and Linode’s acquisition by Akamai, many of their customers and partners are reevaluating their cloud relationships.

So, to any business or developer looking for an alternative to those clouds – we’d like to share a few thoughts.

First, we genuinely think that Vultr has more to offer users, and we know we’re not the only ones. With 25 locations globally, Vultr is available in more places than DigitalOcean and Linode combined. And with VMs powered by the latest 3rd Gen AMD EPYC CPUs, as well as managed Kubernetes and managed databases, Vultr has the cloud infrastructure and platform-as-a-service offerings you’re accustomed to. Vultr also has advanced networking features, like BGP and Direct Connect, as well as bare metal and support for Windows and FreeBSD.

Second, there is now a significant price difference between DigitalOcean and Vultr. For your convenience we’ve included tables at the bottom of this post outlining the key differences after DigitalOcean’s price increase.

It appears that DigitalOcean is betting its customers will be too busy to switch providers, will rationalize the price change as being justified because of inflation, or perhaps will not even notice the change. But, especially for customers and partners spending significant amounts per month on cloud infrastructure, switching to Vultr just became even more valuable. Whether you are facing a 5% price increase or a 20% increase, higher costs compound as your cloud needs grow, and higher prices become a permanent reduction in your margins.

Third, Vultr is on a mission to provide developers and businesses around the world with unrivaled ease of use, global reach, and price-to-performance. We believe that by delivering high-performance cloud infrastructure more efficiently than any platform in the world, we enable our customers and partners to have the most impact possible. At a time when other cloud infrastructure providers are pointing to inflation as the reason they "need” to increase prices despite publicly announcing record profit margins quarter after quarter, we view this moment as more important than ever to deliver more value than ever to our customers.

For anyone interested in trying Vultr, you can sign up here, and receive $200 in free credit for your first 30 days. If you are currently spending more than $1,000 per month on cloud infrastructure, feel free to contact us to discuss receiving a full month of free service on Vultr. Here is some documentation regarding how to import a server to Vultr – we’re working to add guidance specific to DigitalOcean migrations in the coming weeks.

We invite larger businesses and partners to contact us for a free consultation regarding migrating to Vultr.
