One-Click Plesk Onyx

Published on: Thu, Mar 8, 2018 at 12:31 pm EST

This article contains information about the Plesk Onyx application that can be deployed on Vultr.

App Details

To start using Plesk Onyx, navigate to https://[SERVER_IP]:8443/login in your web browser, substituting the [SERVER_IP] with the IP address of your VPS. The login credentials for the Plesk panel are listed in the Vultr control panel and in your activation e-mail. If you have just launched the Plesk Onyx application, please be patient as the application will reboot one time.

The Plesk team hosts a documentation portal that explains the product in further detail. If you're new to using or managing Plesk, you can read more about Plesk on the official documentation portal. After finishing the wizard, you will have access to the main Plesk Onyx admin area.

SSL Warning

The Plesk Onyx control panel can only be accessed over an https:// URL. By default, the https:// URL uses a self-signed certificate, which displays a security warning. This warning can be safely ignored. You will see the same warning when accessing websites created in your Plesk Onyx application over https://.

You may decide to remove the SSL warning entirely. To do so, you would need to obtain a certificate from an actual certificate authority. Plesk comes with the free Security Advisor module which can do this automatically using Let's Encrypt. For Plesk and Let's Encrypt to work together, your server must resolve to a fully qualified domain name over DNS. On Plesk 17.8.10 and later, Advisor automatically replaces the Security Advisor extension.

Domain Setup

When answering the questions in the initial install wizard, Plesk Onyx will ask you for the full domain that will be used. You also need to update the DNS "A record" of your domain to point to your Plesk Onyx server. This will allow you to access Plesk Onyx by navigating to your website (https://www.example.com).

If you need to change your domain name (hostname), there is an option on the "Server Settings" admin area page that can be used to update it.

Security and Firewall

For security purposes, SQL database ports have not been opened to the public. If you plan on using Plesk to manage your database, you may need to allow access to the following ports:

  • MySQL server, TCP 3306
  • MS SQL server, TCP 1433
  • PostgreSQL server, TCP 5432

License Information

We offer several flavors of Plesk Onyx, including Web Admin Edition SE, Web Pro Edition, and Web Host Edition. The edition installed to your server is chosen at the time of deployment and persists for the lifetime of the server. Currently, a new server must be deployed to begin using a different edition of Plesk Onyx. You can view the different license features on the Vultr app page for Plesk Onyx.

Other Information

Plesk Onyx has many features and is highly customizable. See the Administrator Guide for more details.

To access the MySQL database running on your Plesk Onyx server, use the following command.

mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow`

Plesk allows you to create a one-time login URL with the plesk login command line utility.

[root@plesk ~]# plesk login admin
https://example.com:8443/login?secret=1234567890ABCDEF1234567890ABCDEF

About Vultr Applications

Vultr applications use modern releases of software packages. Applications are configured to be deployed with specific versions of software. Over time, the Vultr team will update the application offerings to include newer operating systems, package versions, etc. This document only provides up-to-date information about the latest version of this application. Vultr applications are updated without notice. If you plan to build a project or infrastructure based on our application templates, we recommend taking a snapshot of the application used in your initial deployment.
