Powering multiplayer games and esports with a multicloud strategy

Edgegap provides worldwide edge server infrastructure for multiplayer games, esports teams, and users around the globe. Founded in 2018 by Mathieu Duperré, after winning first place at the Berlin Edge Hackathon, Duperré had a hunch that edge computing would be a key player in the digital future. Built from the ground up, the company now boasts over 350 server locations around the world utilizing several cloud providers.

Specializing in low-latency deployment, Edgegap enables customers to scale without delay by deploying game servers and applications as close to the end users as possible, using their patented solution, Arbitrium, to deliver the closest server within seconds.

Facing high demand and an array of global clients to service, Edgegap needed a server solution a step above the rest.

High coverage, low latency

Because Edgegap serves a worldwide customer base, they require server locations in all corners of the world – including places their leading competitors aren’t supporting. But finding reliable providers proved to be a challenge.

“We were looking for a cloud provider that made integration easy with API documentation and support, as well as simplified billing, and a choice of locations that were in areas we were not yet serving.”

- Philip Cote
CTO

Edgegap supports users with high-demand and ultra-low latency needs to serve users that need faster CPUs, such as multiplayer gamers, Esports teams, and highly-specialized, latency-sensitive users like musicians. This means that Edgegap needed a global network of both virtual and physical servers.

Edgegap also needed a service that offers comprehensive support, particularly when working with specialty clients that require ultra-low-latency solutions. They needed to ensure that any latency issues could be diagnosed and fixed as soon as possible. Although most server providers offered some kind of customer care, the level of detail needed exceeded the capacity of hyperscalers.

“We were looking for a cloud provider that made integration easy with API documentation and support, as well as simplified billing, and a choice of locations that were in areas we were not yet serving,” said CTO Philip Cote.

They also needed to consider the available options for different kinds of servers and virtual machines (VMs) – all without the headache of a complicated setup.

Vultr checks all boxes

While big providers offered decent global reach, they didn’t offer comprehensive support, and smaller solutions that offered hands-on service were lacking in locations and global availability.

But the best of both worlds came in the form of Vultr. When they partnered with Vultr, Edgegap received:

  • Global coverage: With nearly 30 cloud compute server locations worldwide, Vultr can accommodate Edgegap’s global demand, allowing them to cover regions they couldn’t have with other providers. By offering the largest worldwide network, Vultr facilitates low-latency solutions regardless of where Edgegap users might be.
  • Varied server options: Because Edgegap serves customers with different server requirements, having various server types to fit each situation is ideal. Vultr offers Edgegap different server options to choose from depending on their customers’ needs.

For Edgegap’s ultra-low-latency clients, they utilize Vultr Bare Metal servers. Bare Metal grants Edgegap access to physical servers without shared resources and no CPU and IOPS limits. Vultr’s single-tenant environments can power even the most resource-intensive demands, all without the hassle of management overhead like on-prem servers. Edgegap leverages the Vultr Bare Metal service to assist clients needing faster CPU speeds, offering automatic scale-up functions that allow for seamless service with no latency.

  • A multicloud friendly environment: Vultr makes it easy to operate in a multicloud environment, and Edgegap can supplement their needs with instances on other clouds.
  • Full support with easy setup: Because Edgegap needs to provide reliable and fast service, they also require their server solutions to offer them the same. Fortunately, Vultr’s easy-to-use API and thorough documentation means that setup is simple. Vultr's expert team assisted Edgegap throughout the entire process, providing comprehensive, timely support.
  • Transparent pricing: Vultr offers a transparent billing structure, plus lower rates than the hyperscalers, allowing the Edgegap team to scale up and down according to demand.

Huge results for Edgegap

With the help of Vultr, Edgegap can now service customers in geographical locations that weren’t serviceable before. This increased availability has skyrocketed Edgegap’s revenue and market positioning.

While big providers offered decent global reach, they didn’t offer comprehensive support, and smaller solutions that offered hands-on service were lacking in locations and global availability.

With access to Vultr’s different servers, including cloud compute VMs and Bare Metal, Edgegap can ensure that their high-demand customers are always satisfied – no matter where they are or what they’re doing.

Getting started with Vultr is simple, with instant deployment and infinite OS combinations. This allows the Edgegap team to focus on their business rather than spending valuable time and resources to ensure their servers on the other side of the world are working.

Vultr also provides world-class service, with smooth operations and timely solutions if any hiccups occur. This means Edgegap has everything they need.

As Cote affirms, “Vultr is a great partner. They have great service, a great price, and a good presence in all markets. When we need any support, Vultr’s team takes care of it. We’ve felt supported throughout our entire partnership with them.”
